Aregbesola Reads Riot Act On Possession Of Illegal Arms

The Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on Tuesday read a riot act to people in possession of illegal weapons. Receiving the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by his government to look into the crises between Ipetumodu and Ashipa communities in Ife-North Local government of Osun at the Government House in Osogbo, he ordered that they should voluntarily surrender such arms to relevant authorities.
According to him, those concerned, who are habitually breaching the peace and trampling on the rule of law should prepare themselves ahead of the May 29 to hand over arms in their passion after which he said they would enjoy one week of grace to do so. Describing the one week grace as a week of peace and disarmament, the governor disclosed that his government had set up a Standing Commission of Inquiry in the state to regularly review all cases of abuse of power or status that may threaten peace and harmonious relationship in the state.

Aregbesola also called on politicians and people with those he called “Private Army” and guards to immediately disband such structures as the state is entering an era where it will be strict on the maintenance of rule of law, peace and order and the guarantee of the rights of the citizen.
The communities of Ipetumodu and Ashipa had engaged in an orgy of violence and were on the path of mutual destruction before the intervention of law enforcement agencies, the state government and other leaders.‎

He held that people should exhibit maturity in making claims to land so that communities will not witness violence that will diminish human existence.
The governor advised that differences on land should not lead to violence due to the fact that there will always be claims and counterclaims on land hence the need for a matured way of resolving such issues.

According to him: “People with illegal weapons should voluntarily submit it to relevant authorities in not more than one week from now before government begins to fish them out.
“People should live to the dictate of the law, our government will after the one week ultimatum embark on house-to-house search for illegal weapons so that the state can have peace.
“Whoever is caught after the one week deadline will face the full wrath of the law because we are not in a stone age. The state will care for the weak. We are admonishing the strong to be mindful of those that are not strong. “We are entering an era in the state and the country at large, where government of All Progressives Congress (APC) will be strict on the issue of rule of law, maintenance of peace and order and the guarantee of rights of citizens.”

He charged people of the state to at all times, resort to Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) rather than result to violence and arson when issues like land dispute arise.
Earlier, the Chairman of the judicial commission of inquiry into Ipetumodu-Ashipa communal crisis, Justice Jide Falola, urged the governor to set up implementation committee to review the recommendations.
The committee recommended on the payment of compensation to victims noted that the two communities should be surcharged to pay certain for officially sponsoring and supporting the crises morally and materially.

He also recommended that Ife-North local government should also be surcharged for allowing the establishment of market in Ipetumodu on a government acquired land without approval from the state government. He said: “We have virtually resolved the dispute between the two communities especially the market day issue and boundary. We have also recommended that some persons be investigated and possible prosecution. There is a proliferation of arms and ammunition in the axis of the two communities. Those in possession are reportedly being protected by elites in the society. We have recommended that police should take steps to clean up the area of these dangerous weapons.

Buhari Can Rescue Our Daughters – Chibok Girls Parent

One of the parents of the abducted Chibok girls Rev. Mark Enoch has declared complete faith in President-Elect Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and his ability to rescue the remaining 219 Chibok girls in captivity.

He said that things will now be better because Gen. Buhari has the ability to destroy the Boko Haram sect like he destroyed the Maitasine movement in 1984 and bring back the Chibok girls that were abducted a year ago.

Rev. Enoch stated this Tuesday in Abuja, after the press conference held by members of the Kibaku Area Development Association (KADA) and umbrella body of the Chibok community in Abuja, titled ‘one year commemoration of the abduction of  Chibok girls: the unending agony of a community’.

He said, “I know that as General Buhari is now the President elect, things will be better, he can rescue our daughters, he can bring our daughter back home. He can end all the atrocities of the Boko Haram sect like he addressed the Maitasine movement in 1984 and our girls will return, so we the Chibok girls’ parents are excited.

“I will like to appreciate madam Oby ezekwesilli, members of the #BringBackOurGirls advocacy, they are the Mandela’s of our time.”

KADA in their press statement said that despite the gloomy picture of what is happening in their community before and after the abduction, they are still hopeful that the girls will come back home alive.

They said, “After the abduction, Chibok area was attacked six times with resultant high causalities including eleven of the parents and guardians of the abducted girls. The people of Chibok are today haunted, displaced, traumatized and living in agony as refugees or internally displaced persons all over Nigeria and beyond. There is also looming famine in the Chibok (Kibaku) community and environs as a result of the terrorism that has virtually crippled farming activities. Wanton destruction of food stuff, granaries and livestock’s were perpetrated by the insurgency. There was also poisoning or destruction of water wells, the primary source of water for the community.

“Despite the gloomy picture of what is happening in the community, we are still hopeful that our girls will come back alive. We are hoping that Mr President will keep his word by bringing the girls back alive before leaving office on 29th May 2015. Even if he fails to achieve it, we are hopeful that the President-Elect will Bring Back Our Girls alive.

“In the abduction saga, it is true that the girls are the victims, the parents and guardians are suffering the agony, trauma and pains, but the embarrassment is that of the government and the people of Nigeria, while the military suffered humiliation. We urge all to come together and find a lasting solution to this saga so as to save our face as a country.”

Lagos Fire Disaster: Two Killed, Four Injured

An early morning fire Tuesday consumed two adults and injured four others in the Ikotun area of Lagos.

The victims of the incident which occurred at 57, Authority Avenue, off  Ilewe bus stop, at about 2am, were said to be one Mr.Oseghale and his sister in law, Ngozi, who were burnt to death.

While the man was recovered in the living room, Ngozi’s body was said to have been found in one of the rooms.

Fortunately, the deceased’s wife and three children were recovered alive by firemen, thanks to the woman’s thoughtfulness.

She was said to have destroyed one of the window nets fixed in her room, from where she stationed the children so as to avoid their being suffocated.

It was learnt that all four survivors were in that position until firemen from the state fire service arrived and rescued them.

Confirming the incident, the fire service director, Rasaq Fadipe said investigations were on to unravel the cause of the inferno.

He explained that his men had to perforate the walls and use ladder to gain access into the apartment, adding that it was difficult to enter the flat through the staircase.

“It was a tragic situation. The fire started around midnight and involved a storey building. A young man and a lady were burnt to death while we recovered four others alive.

“We found the man lying on the floor while another lady, said to have only arrived from the village on a visit, was found burnt in one of the rooms.

“We were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other flats in the building. We released the bodies to policemen attached to Ikotun division.”

Uneasy Calm In Delta After Ijaw/Itsekiri Clash

Uneasy calm pervaded the Escravos area in Warri South West Local Government Area of Delta State following midnight reprisal attack by suspected Ijaw militias on Madangho, an Itsekiri community.
At least two houses were were torched when about 30 heavily armed Ijaw youths stormed the community from Gbaramatu, an Ijaw home clan of former warlord, Chief Government Ekpemupolo (AKA Tompolo). Two suspects were also arrested for the initial attack, which left a 50-year-old security guard in critical condition. It was gathered that the attack was a revenge mission by the marauders following an unprovoked machete attack on the Ijaw security guard at Kpokpo, site of the $16bn gas city project by three Itsekiri youths from Madangho.

An Ugborodo source, who denounced the action of his kinsmen, said, “The old man was guarding tractors and swamp bogey being used to clear the land for the deep sea port when he was attacked by our brothers from Madangho. “The Ijaws later came back in anger and started shooting and burning. Two houses were burnt before they left at about midnight. “They came back very early in the morning again and I counted over 30 youths armed with sophisticated weapons. They shot for several minutes until some soldiers came and engaged them in a shoutout, which forced them to flee,” a source said.

The Commanding Officer, 3 Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Lt Col Ekong Bassey, confirmed the report, adding that calm had been restored. He said the matter was being handled by leaders of both communities amicably.

Nevertheless, it was gathered that the incident heightened tension between the two ethnic groups that have been locked in a cat-and-mouse game over the $16billion Gas City and Deep Sea Port project. Kpokpo, the site of the deep sea port, is a subject of contention between the two sides.
Various sources told our reporter that the face-off almost degenerated into a full blown war on Tuesday morning following a blockade on the waterways around Gbaramatu kingdom by the Ijaw militias. “Boats leaving Ugborodo and other Itsekiri villages for Warri and other upland communities were turned back by the Ijaw youths. They also didn’t allow boats coming into their barricades to Ugborodo.”

However, it was learnt that calm was gradually returning to the area at the time of this report (3:30pm) on Tuesday following the intervention of Tompolo and Itsekiri leaders who are suing for peace. It was gathered that the peace shuttle was helped by the arrest of two of the three recalcitrant Itsekiri youths who carried out the unprovoked attack on the Ijaw night guard.

Jonathan also explained that the budget would be funded with Ecological fund of N40billion and other internally generated revenue estimated at N100million, amounting to the total sum of N300.1billion.

Meanwhile, the absence of the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation, Senator Ahmed Maccido, stalled the formal presentation of its report on the 2015 National budget.
Maccido, was not available to present the document when he was invited to do so by the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma – Egba.

This necessitated the postponement of the presentation to the next legislative day.

The Petroleum Industry Bill also suffered setback as the chairman of the Joint Committee on Petroleum (Upstream & Downstream), and Gas Resources, Senator Emmanuel Paulker,  was not also available to present the report before the lawmakers.
