Don't Pay More Than N6,350 For Driver's Licence, FRSC Boss Tells Nigerians

Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said original Driver's Licence (DL) in the country IS N6,350 and applicants must go to any DL office of their choice for biometric capturing.

Oyeyemi said this in Abuja on Tuesday at a one-day workshop organised by the commission for members of security agencies in the country on verification procedure of DL and number plates.

According to him, authentic licence is produced in all the licensing offices in the country and that the process is thorough and saves costs for applicants that follow it up.

"Members of the public who give money and passport size photograph to anybody in order to collect driver’s licence are doing disservice to themselves.

"Going through third party costs more money and produces fake licence to unsuspecting applicants, which is an offence. Cost of original driver’s licence is N6,350 and the applicant must go for biometrics at any licensing office across the country to obtain the licence.

"This is safer and costs less compared to the ones that pay third party for driver’s licence and at the end of the day, they will be apprehended for carrying fake licence," the corps marshal said.

Oyeyemi said anybody found with a fake licence would be prosecuted as it is a criminal offence.
"It is a criminal matter because the states need the revenue to develop their areas," he said.

The FRSC boss said that banks and other agencies that required data would also be considered for subsequent workshops on the exercise.

The workshop was attended by members of the armed forces and other security agencies in the country including the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy and the Air Force.

Others include: personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Vehicle Inspection Office.

DEFECTION: Orubebe Tells The Popular Story, Then Insults Again

Former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, has rubbished the reports making the rounds that he is planning to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Orubebe, who is believed to be a die hard PDP member following his infamous display during the collation of presidential election results, says his twitter handle through which the announcement (which he has now disowned) was made had been hacked.

Orubebe however in a series of tweets (from the same handle:  @ElderGOrubebe) said: “Neither myself nor my supporters have any intention to defect to the APC. I have ordered that earlier message be deleted. It wasn’t from me.

"It Won't Stop Raining!", Say States That Prayed For Rain For Four Years

It just keeps getting worse. The gully-washers and toad-stranglers are in full force across Texas and Oklahoma at this hour as the region stares down the barrel of more heavy rain and flooding after years of thirsting for some delicious sky water. Some spots could see double-digit rainfall totals by this time next week.

A favorable jet stream and winds from the south mean that the floodgates are open for deep, tropical moisture to pour into the central United States from the Gulf of Mexico, and this ribbon of evaporated paradise is allowing thunderstorms to unload wherever they happen to set up. The shape of the jet stream is favorable for troughs and surface lows to keep spinning up over the central Plains, allowing heavy rain and thunderstorms to plague the entire south-central United States, but especially Texas and Oklahoma.

These rainfall totals aren’t exactly a sneeze’s worth, either—Oklahoma City has seen nearly five times its normal rainfall for the month of May, recording 12.83 inches for the month compared to the month-to-date normal of 2.73 through May 18. Totals aren’t quite as prolific farther to the south, but Dallas is sitting at 6.30 inches for the month, which is double DFW Airport’s month-to-date normal of about three inches.

It’s a far cry from where the area was this time last year.

The Weather Prediction Center expects a large swath of five or more inches of rain over the next seven days, with parts the Red River Valley at risk for seeing seven or more inches fall through next Tuesday. Rainfall from thunderstorms is highly localized, and it just takes one storm stalling out or a training line to produce copious totals in a short period of time.

Do not drive through a flooded roadway. Always assume you won’t make it. If you want to risk a violent death, that’s on you, but don’t risk the lives of the people who have to come out there to save you or recover your body, and especially don’t do something stupid like that if you have passengers.

Even though this advice is repeated time after time, people don’t listen because they think they know better. More than half of all flood-related deaths occur in vehicles, and the water can take away a heavy-duty pickup track almost as easily as it can claim one of those little Smart Fortwo things.

Just yesterday in Ruston, Louisiana, a woman driving with her two children attempted to navigate through a flash flood, and their car was swept away by the swiftly-moving waters. She managed to save herself, the 7-year-old clung to a tree and was rescued, and the 11-year-old drowned in the vehicle.

The best advice is to just stay home during a flash flood warning, but that’s not always feasible; most people will have to venture out at some point. If you’re out, take it slow and keep an eye out for ponding on the roadway. It’s often hard or impossible to judge water depth on a road. If you’re unsure, heed the National Weather Service’s flood safety motto: “turn around, don’t drown.”

Police, Family Tango Over Death Of Son

Palpable tension has gripped the people of Okwu, Emekuku, in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State, following the alleged death of their son, Omeni Ajaero, in police custody.

Some concerned natives of the community, who spoke on strict grounds of anonymity, traced the sad incident to internal family squabble arising from a bitter tussle over family property.

“Late  J. N. Ajaero married three wives and since he died, the family has never known peace because of the scramble for the property left behind by their father.

‘’The bad blood created by this scramble was very deep and has degenerated to what has just happened,” a villager claimed.

Nyanya bombing: How Ogwuche, 5 Other Suspects Were Arrested

Full-blown trial of the alleged mastermind of the April 14, 2014, bomb blast that killed over 75 persons and wounded 100 others at a crowded motor park in Nyanya, Abuja, Aminu Ogwuche, commenced before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, yesterday.

In a bid to prove its allegation that it was indeed Ogwuche and five other alleged members of the Boko Haram terrorist sect that perfected the terrorist act, the government, yesterday, brought its star witness to testify before the trial court.

The witness, who was simply identified as the ‘PW-1’, took his time and narrated how undercover operatives of the Department for State Service, DSS, apprehended each  of the six accused persons.

He told the court that aside the first accused person, Ogwuche, who, he said, was arrested in Sudan and extradited to Nigeria  to face trial, the five other accused persons scattered themselves to different states in the Northern part of the country.

China Teacher Allowed To Give Birth And Ordered To Abort

A schoolteacher who gained permission to have an additional child in her hometown in one Chinese province has been ordered to have an abortion because the province where she is teaching has different rules, a family planning officer confirmed Tuesday.

The case illustrates how different areas have different family planning regulations and how unyielding China's birth limits continue to be despite a recent loosening in the 35-year-old policy to allow more couples to have two children.

Both pregnant Qin Yi and her husband Meng Shaoping had a daughter with their previous spouses, so the newly married couple is not allowed to have their own child according to Guizhou province's regulations, the education bureau and health and family planning commission in Guizhou's Libo county said in a notice Monday.

Jay Z and Beyoncé May Have Paid Bail for Baltimore Protesters, Says Collaborator

At the height of political unrest in Baltimore last month, as protesters were being arrested by the hundreds, Jay Z appeared to remain silent on the issue of police brutality. The rap mogul was criticized on Twitter for aggressively promoting his music streaming service, Tidal, at a time when he could have voiced support for protesters marching after the death of Freddie Gray, a black man who died while in police custody.

Detroit-based activist and Jay Z collaborator Dream Hampton presented a different side of the story on Sunday when she suggested that Jay Z may be silently supporting Baltimore protesters with his checkbook rather than his social media presence.
