Founder Of Israeli Settler Movement Dies At 80

Rabbi Moshe Levinger, who founded the militant Gush Emunim movement which pushed Jewish settlements in the West Bank, died aged 80 on Saturday, relatives said.

Born in 1935 in Jerusalem to a family of German origin, Levinger studied in his youth under Rabbi Tzvi Yehudah Kook, the spiritual father of religious nationalism.

Shortly after the 1967 Six-Day War in which Israel captured east Jerusalem and the West Bank, Levinger and a group of like-minded people decided to settle in the occupied territory.

Their goal was to create a Jewish presence in Palestinian cities which are important sites from Jewish history, such as Hebron and Bethlehem.

In September 1967, the Labour government authorised the creation of the first settlement at Kfar Etzion, on the ruins of a kibbutz destroyed by the Arab Legion on the eve of the 1948 declaration of the state of Israel.

The 19-year-old statuesque model went rocker-chic this week, pairing a $78 Free People graphic tank with sleek white skinny jeans from J Brand for $198. FG Urged To Include Cancer Treatment In NHIS

A Consultant, Clinical and Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Omolola Salako has said that Nigerians will continue to experience high rate of mortality from cancer scourge except the government came to the aide of the victims on treatment through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Salako who is also the Executive Director of  Sebeccly Cancer Care, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) noted that with over 80 per cent of Nigerian cancer patients paying out of pocket, there was the need for the government to place cancer care under the National Health Insurance Scheme, (NHIS).

The Consultant, who made the appeal during the media flag-off of Sebeccly Cancer Care and Support Centre’s 2015 ‘Light Lagos Pink’, in Lagos recently said the only way more Nigerians would survive cancer, particularly the indigent patients was for the government to include cancer treatment under the NHIS.

She argued that if cancer care was accommodated by the NHIS, Nigeria would increase cancer survival rates as well as reduce out of pocket payment by 30- 40 per cent.

“We are not saying government should take care of the entire bill, but they should take care of the chunk of the cost of treatment. If the patient pays for surgery, government can pay for radiotherapy. If the patients pay for chemotherapy, government can pay for target therapy.

406 Sacked Staff To Face Criminal Charges : NIMC

Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Mr. Chris Onyemenam has revealed that the 406 disengaged staff would be facing criminal charges as required by the constitution.

The commission explained that the reason it delayed the sack of the 406 staff despite the court order issued in its favour last December was because it decided to thread  the line of caution.

The Director General  disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja where he also denied embezzling N30 billion meant for the production of the National Identity card.
He  stressed that the case of the affected staff had been handed over to the appropriate authority.

According to him, "It is not true that NIMC has planned to sack or retrench 1,000 workers. However 406 senior members of staff who falsified their service records and thus have been profiting from that fraud, have been formally reported to the appropriate offices for further action."

Fulani Herdsmen Kill 8 In Benue

Men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen on Friday attacked a Benue community in  Shengev district of Gwer West Local Government Area  (LGA) killing eight  persons  while hundred others have been displaced.

The communities; Tse-Agbulu, Tse-Atakpa and Tse-Abichi among others were besieged by the marauders with sporadic gunshots while many were wounded and dispossessed of their belongings.

According to a source, those who sustained injury from the attack were currently receiving treatment at Naka, headquarters of the local council. The source gave the names of those who were killed as Iorhen Agbulu, Mrs. Anakula Gbesa and Mr. Agboughul Uoor, while Godwin Ahuna was said to be seriously macheted.

Worried by the  killing of their people by the herdsmen, President, Tyoshin Development Association, a socio-cultural organisation, Dr. Sylvester Ugbegili in a statement condemned the unprovoked attack and grazing of cattle on farm lands causing damage to crops.

Jonathan Moves Property From Aso Rock, Plans Global Shuttle

With just 13 days left of his tenure and the May 29 handover date beckoning, President Goodluck Jonathan and his family have practically packed out all their belongings from Aso Rock, the seat of government in Abuja.

A Presidency source said that what Jonathan and his family still have in Aso Rock are few hand luggage that could be moved out in the morning of May 29.

Checks revealed that the out-going President has since moved on from his defeat in the Presidential election and has mapped out his post-presidency plans which includes playing the role of a global statesman by taking advantage of the huge boost in his ratings as a result of his conceding defeat by calling his opponent, Muhammadu Buhari before the final tally of the election results.

His post-presidency plan, the source said, would commence immediately after he hands over on May 29 to Muhammadu Buhari.

“The President has not been a free man in the last 16 years. He is savouring his freedom. He has been working in the last 16 years from Deputy Governor, to Governor, to Vice-president and eventually the President of Nigeria with all the complexities. He is enjoying his freedom again. His itinerary as revealed include a tour of some African countries, earthquake devasted Nepal, a trip he is said to have planned before the earthquake and a medical check-up in Germany.
