Housemaid Bites Mother of 3 To Death


The police in Oyo State are investigating how an alleged bite by a housemaid, Elizabeth Fatoki, led to the death of her employer’s neighbour.

According to a source, the deceased, identified as Tawa Lawal, 30, was engaged in a brawl with the maid when the latter bit her bosom.

Mrs. Lawal was then rushed to a hospital, where she died after some days.

The deceased, a mother of three, lived at Salvation Army area of Ekotedo in Ibadan North-West area of the state.

FG Begins Distribution Of N5bn Clean Cooking Stoves


The federal government yesterday begins distribution of N5 billion clean cooking stoves for rural women all over the country.

According to Vice President Namadi Sambo, the stoves would help to a greater extent to reduce desertification in the country.

The prices of the stoves locally assembled in Nigeria ranges between N3,000 and N36,000.

Sambo who spoke at the launch of the stoves in the Banquet Hall of the presidential villa, Abuja noted that stoves would also boost job creation as well as reduce smoke related diseases among the rural women.

Wife Drags Husband To Court For Stealing Her N15,000 Phone


The police on Tuesday arraigned a 38-year-old civil servant, Cyril Agochi, of Federal Government College, Keffi, before a Mararaba Upper Area Court for stealing a phone.

Agochi is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal force and theft.

The police prosecutor, Sgt. Stephen Kwaza, told the court that Doris Agochi of State House Quarters Mararaba, reported the matter at the Sani Abacha Road Police Station, Mararaba.

Kwaza said that on Feb. 17 at about 6:00 p.m., the accused who is her husband, came to her house at the above address, beat her up and stole her phone valued at N15, 000.

A Nigerian, Dickson Ndukwe Agbai has emerged the best doctorate student with the highest grade from the Newcastle University, England.

Dickson, a native of Ugwueke Community in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State was adjudged the best for the award of the doctorate degree following his outstanding thesis on: ‘Analysis of Biofuel Potential in Nigeria.’

FG Workers Arraigned For N1bn Economic Reform Scam


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Tuesday arraigned two workers in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation for N1bn scam.

The accused, Mohammed Audu, aka Abdullahi Mohammed, and Yahaya Ayodeji  were arraigned before Justice Yusuf Halilu of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory Jabi, Abuja, on 10 counts bordering on criminal conspiracy and complicity in award of contact.

The EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren said, “The duo abused their offices by floating companies through which they cornered contracts emanating from the World Bank’s Economic Reform and Governance Project, domiciled in the office of the Accountant General of the Federation.”

Man Sends Thugs To Pour Acid On Ex-wife


One Ajayi Olatunbosun has been arrested by the police for allegedly hiring thugs to pour acid on his ex-wife, Bamidele Otakiti, in her shop on Adejobi Street in the Ajasa Command area of Lagos.

All had been well between the couple since they moved to Lagos in 2005 until a few months ago when a disagreement soured their relationship.

The quarrel was said to have led to their separation in February, 2015.

It was learnt that the suspect, prior to the divorce, had on several occasions accused Otakiti of adultery.

Lagos To Arraign Briton For $8.8m Fraud


The Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions has filed criminal charges against a British citizen, Deepak Khilnani, for fraud.

Sources said the state might soon file a request for his extradition to face criminal charges in Nigeria.

Khilnani, an Indian-Briton chartered accountant, was said to have, along with one Dr. Sushil Chandra, duped his Nigerian partner, Green Fuels Limited, to the tune of $8.8m in 2008.

The DPP, last week Thursday, filed a charge marked ID/1544c/15 before the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja against the suspects.

The charge contains four counts bordering on conspiracy, cheating, stealing and false representation.

Kidnappers Demand Ak-47 Machine Guns As Ransom


The Rivers State Police Command has said that two suspected kidnappers have confessed that they demanded one AK-47 and 12 general purpose machine guns as ransom for the release of their victim, Mrs. Chinyere Olumma. Olumma was rescued on Friday, May 22.

The suspects, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ahmad Mohammad, had given the family of the victim an option of paying N50m as ransom or providing one AK-47 and 12 general purpose machine guns before their victim would be released.

Mohammad, who spoke with newsmen on Tuesday, disclosed that the hoodlums had initially collected the sum of N1m from Olumma’s family for the upkeep of their victim.

Three Family Members Killed Over Land Dispute


Three members of a family in Amechi community, Awkunanaw Local Government Area of Enugu State have lost their lives over a land dispute.

The victims were identified as Nnaemeka Agbo (alias Echidime), Sunday Nnamani, and Nnamani Ikpa.

The disputed land lies directly opposite government-owned Millennium Estate, which is still under construction along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

It was gathered that a yet-to-be identified gunman shot and killed the young men on May 1, 2015 while they were on the said land

Lassa Fever Patient Dies After Visiting Liberia


More than seven months after Thomas Eric Duncan, the first case of the Ebola Virus Disease diagnosed in the United States died, a man who has just returned from Liberia has died of Lassa fever in the US.

Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness with similar symptoms to the EVD. According to the World Health Organisation, the fever usually occurs in West Africa, and is transmitted to human through contact with food or items contaminated with rodents’ urine or faeces.

The deceased, whose name and nationality has yet to be made public by the US authorities, was said to have arrived the US from Liberia on May 17.

Group Asks Court To Stop Buhari’s Inauguration


A group, Advocacy for Societal Rights Advancement and Development Initiative, has instituted a fresh suit before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to stop the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, from swearing the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday.

The suit filed on Tuesday is also seeking an order nullifying the certificate of return issued to Buhari by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The plaintiff hinged the suit on the allegation that Buhari did not qualify to contest the presidential election on the grounds that he gave false information about his academic qualification to INEC.

Between January and February 2015 there were about 10 cases instituted by various plaintiffs challenging Buhari’s eligibility to stand for the poll on the grounds of his academic qualification controversy. But after he won, the cases were withdrawn.

I Joined Robbery Gang To Feed My Siblings -- Suspect


The police in Lagos have arrested five suspected members of a robbery gang which unleashed terror on residents of Ijanikin area on Sunday, May 24.

One of the robbery suspects, 25-year-old Ajayi Solomon, said that he went into armed robbery because his parents were late and he needed to take care of his siblings.

Apart from Solomon, the other suspects arrested are Momodu Williams, 19, Kazeem Ganiyu, 19, Seun Ariyo, 20, and Elijah Dada,19.

The gang, which is said to have about 40 members, allegedly robbed residents and commuters in Ketu, Iyana Era, Alasia, Morogbo areas and environs.

Police Prevent Lynching Of Psychiatric Patient Over Kidnap Allegation


The timely intervention of detectives from Ondo State Police Command reportedly saved a 25-year-old psychiatric patient from being set ablaze for allegedly attempting to kidnap some primary school pupils in Ondo town, yesterday.

Some youths in Oka area of the town were about roasting him alive, when policemen arrived the scene.

The suspect, identified as Peter Oyeyemi, was accused of lurking around the school when youths saw him and kept a tab on him.

Police Arrest Two Suspected Kidnappers In Ekiti


Ekiti State Police Command, yesterday, arrested two people believed to be kidnappers, who have been terrorising the people of the state lately.

This disclosure was made in Ado Ekiti in a broadcast by the state governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose.

According to Fayose, one Olumide, 31 and one Folorunsho, both from Esure Ekiti, were arrested by the police between Ikere and Iju, while trying to escape.

Also arrested was a woman believed to be the wife of one of the kidnappers, simply known as Augustina.

He further said a manhunt has been launched for the remaining five to six kidnappers, who are believed to hail from Benin and its environs in Edo State.

Female NYSC Member Found Dead In Kwara


Tragedy struck in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, on Sunday night as a member of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, serving in the state, Miss Yetunde Shukurat Idowu, was found dead on the street.

Her last visit before she was found dead was to the popular shopping mall, Shoprite, located along Fate Road.

Consequently, concerned roommate and neighbours constituted themselves into a search party that found Yetunde stone dead on a street at GRA, Ilorin.

It was also gathered that the family of the late youth corps member had been contacted, while her corpse would be released today (Wednesday) on the insistence of the family.
