My Husband Beats Me As If We Are In A Boxing Competition,” Woman Tells Court


A trader, Fatimo Nurudeen, on Friday pleaded with an Agege Customary Court in Lagos State to dissolve her 12-year-old marriage for alleged frequent beating and fetish practice by her husband.

Fatimo, 31, who lives at 32, Akiode St., Ibafo, Ogun, told the court that her husband beats her frequently.

“I don’t think my husband is normal because he beats me as if we are in a boxing competition.

“Also, he brought home a substance suspected to be fetish in nature and put it in our room. I was afraid of it, and my children and myself had to run for our dear lives from our matrimonial home.

“My husband drinks to stupor and smokes Indian hemp, after which he usually loses self control.

“I do not love him anymore, I want a dissolution of our marriage ,” the mother of two children; ages seven years and ten years said.

Fatimo also told the court that she had been the one responsible for the upkeep of her children before and after she had packed out of her husband’s house three years’ ago.

“I want the custody of my children but I want him to be responsible for their monthly upkeep,” she said.

The husband, Ayomide Yakubu, 35, a welder by occupation, failed to appear in court.

The President, Mr Phillips Williams, told the woman to maintain the peace and ordered the court registrar to serve Yakubu another court summons.


Williams adjourned the case to June 1 for further hearing.

Nigerian Female Student Sentenced To Death In Malaysia For Drug Trafficking


A 30 year old Nigerian female student in Malaysia identified as Mary George Unazi, was sentenced to death by the Malaysian High Court on May 14th for trafficking 765.9gm of methamphetamine at the KL International Airport (KLIA) on May 10th 2011.

The presiding judge, Judge Datuk Ghazali Cha, while delivering his judgement said all evidence brought against her proved that she was indeed guilty of trafficking the banned substance. He said she had failed on her part to convince the court that the bag which contained the substance wasn't hers.

EFCC Arraigns 22-Year-Old Suspected Hacker For Fraud


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Thursday May 14, 2015 arraigned one Mary Ozala before Justice Kudirat. A. Jose of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja on a 4- count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences.  Three other suspects, Nwokeke C. Chukwunonso, Shedrach Umeh and Uchenna Okpala are at large.

Ozala, 22-year-old student and her co-travelers are alleged to have hacked into the email account of the complainant whom they fraudulently defrauded of the sum of N2 million.  When the charge was read to the defendant in court, she pleaded not guilty.

One of the counts reads: “that you Mary Ozala, Nwokeke C. Chukwunonso, Shedrach Umeh (still at large), Uchenna Okpala (still at large) on or about the 7th day of August, 2013 at Ikeja within the Ikeja Judicial Division, with intent to defraud conspire to steal the sum of N2,000,000.00 (two million naira) property of Capital Field Investment and Trust Limited. by hacking into an email account of the company's investor, one Ronke Okewole and fraudulently instructing Capital Investment and Trust Limited to withdraw the sum of N2,000,000.00 (two million naira) from Ronke Okewole's account to credit the account of one Ezeigwe Chinenye Henrietta with Zenith Bank Plc. Account no. 2009811047".

Mob Sets Ablaze Three Robbery Suspects In Ogoja


Three young men suspected to have robbed traders in the popular Okuku Market in Yala Local Government Area, in the northern part of Cross River State, were on Thursday afternoon set ablaze by a mob amidst the wailing of women who witnessed the gory scene.

The young men comprising two indigenes of the area and one from Ebonyi State were alleged to have waylaid the traders from Akwa Ibom State who throng the market every five days to buy food stuff at the markets motor park and robbed them of the money they came with to buy food stuff.

“Yesterday was Okuku market’s eve and many traders from Calabar (Akwa Ibom and Rivers) usually come here on the eve of the market so that they could buy yams and garri early before everything is bought by others, due the bad road and distance they usually sleep in the market park before the market day," Maria Ipuole, said.

She said at about 7 pm on Wednesday when the bus carrying the traders arrived the park, the boys armed with locally made pistols and machetes attacked the them and dispossessed them of their money and phones killing one of them in the process.

NOA Honours Cleaner Who Returned N12m At Lagos Airport


National Orientation Agency,NOA, Thursday honoured the airport cleaner, Miss Josephine Agwu who returned N12miilion that was forgotten by one of the passengers with the Citizens Responsibility Recognition award at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos.

Director General of National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mr. Mike Omeri presented the award and a national flag to Miss Agwu for her display of honesty.

Mr. Omeri said that the airport cleaner, Miss Agwu has painted the image of the country in a good light which had hitherto been tainted by the conduct of a few Nigerians.

According to him, government was honouring her for doing the right thing adding that her conduct was in line with the new slogan of the agency. He also said that the agency would not relent in rewarding Nigerians that exhibited such honesty in the discharge of their duties.

22.6m Nigerians Unemployed In 2014 : NBS


Over twenty-two million Nigerians were unemployed in Nigeria in 2014. This was revealed Friday, at the unemployment methodology review forum held at the National Bureau of Statistics in Abuja.

The number according to NBS was an accumulation of the number of unemployed Nigerians in the four quarters of the year which represents 31 per cent of the country’s   population as against 18.3 per cent according to International Labour Organization’s, ILO standard.

Out of  22,620,202 unemployed Nigerians, 4,672,067 million were unemployed in the fourth quarter, 7,027941 million were unemployed in the 3rd quarter and 5,307,375 million was unemployed in the second quarter, while 5,612, 819 million were unemployed in the first quarter of the year under review.

A further breakdown of the unemployment statistics was drawn from educational group; age group; gender and place of residence.

According to NBS, the figure increased by 21 per cent from 7,078,450 million (10.0%) recorded in the previous year.

Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s First Grandchild, Rolari Set To Wed

The first grandchild of the creator of Afrobeat music, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, aka Abami Eda, Rolari Segun, is set to quit the singles’ club.

Rolari, who is a product of the marriage between Fela’s first daughter, Yeni Kuti and the late Femi Segun, son of famous writer, Mabel Segun, will be getting married to an Australian author, Benedict Jacka come June 27, 2015, at the New Afrikan Shrine, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.

Rolari graduated from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, in 2010, while Benedict is a graduate of Philosophy from Cambridge University and has written a couple of books among which are the Alex Verus’ series including Fated, Cursed, Taken, Chosen and Hidden. He grew up in London where he has worked as a teacher, bouncer and a civil servant.


LASTMA Official Beaten Blue-Black In Ikorodu


According twitter user, @biggyli who tweeted about the incident with photos, the LASTMA official had trailed a vehicle who broke traffic rules but was trying to dodge. The defaulting driver who was driving the company vehicle was said to have quickly drove into the premises of his company in a bid to avoid the LASTMA official meeting up with him and punishing/fining him for disobeying traffic rules.

However, an argument ensued and the LASTMA official was said to have been beaten blue-black with sympathizers trying to pull the LASTMA official up after he was beaten and pushed to the ground by workers of the company. See photos below:

275 Rescued Women, Children Free Of HIV/AIDS : UNICEF


The recently rescued 275 women and children from the clutches of Boko Haram in Adamawa State are free of HIV/AIDS, according to an official of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)
.
Ms Ruth Ugwu, a Nursing staff with UNICEF at the internally displaced persons (IDPs) camp in Malkohi, Adamawa State, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yola, on Thursday.

Ugwu said that their clean health status followed medical screenings and health rehabilitations conducted on the victims.

The nurse confirmed that after intensive medical check-up at the camp clinic, the victims were found HIV/AIDS negative.

"Both rescued women and the children, after several health screening, the result available is that they are free of HIV/AIDS.

"The only illnesses we noticed among them, especially the children, are malnutrition and eyes problem," Ugwu said.

It Took Me 7 Hours To Swallow 70 Wraps Of Cocaine : Suspect


A 39-year-old suspected drug trafficker, Celestine Ikechukwu Okonkwo, has narrated his ordeal in the hands of drug barons who sponsored his trip to Brazil.

The suspect, who used to sell used clothes at Idumota market, Lagos State, said that he was promised a good job abroad but was made to suffer untold hardship before being used in smuggling cocaine.

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency's commander at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, Mr. Hamisu Lawan, who said that the suspect tested positive for cocaine ingestion, declared: “the suspect tested positive to drug ingestion while returning from Sao Paulo, Brazil. He later excreted 70 wraps of cocaine weighing 1.326kg.”

Okonkwo said that he was a happy man until the drug barons approached him with a promise of better job abroad.

 “I was in my shop at Idumota market where I sell used clothes. I will never forget the day a young man came to my shop to buy shirt. He told me he is from Anambra and that he lives in Brazil. He also promised to help me with a good job opportunity over there.

Man Arraigned For Hacking A 63-Year-Old Man To Death


An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos has remanded a 37-year-old man, Sunday Obadele, in prison custody for allegedly hacking to death a 63-year-old man.

The Magistrate, Mrs. O.I. Adelaja, ordered the accused to be kept behind bars at Ikoyi Prisons pending advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The accused is facing a two-count charge of murder and conspiracy.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odigie, told the court that the offences were committed on February 17 at 1.30 p.m. at No. 16, Araromi Street, Oto-Awori area of Ijanikin.

“The duo had a heated argument which led to a fight between Obadele and the deceased, Amuda Abudo.

Wizkid Still Most Followed Nigerian On Twitter


Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has remained the most followed Nigerian on Twitter, a position once occupied by the Founder and Senior Pastor of Christ Embassy, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.

While Wizkid tops the list with 1.55 million followers, Oyakhilome maintains the second position with 1.36 million.

The popular pastor has not grown much on Twitter since 2013. Then, he was on top of the ladder, leading his closest rival (Wizkid) by more than 50 per cent.

In the last two years, the clergyman only gained a little over 200,000 additional fans on Twitter, while the Afro-pop singer moved up by close to a million followers.

Davido’s handle, @iam_Davido, also ‘harvested’ large followers on the site within the period, with the figure rising from 300,000 to 1.26 million.

Other entertainers that have over a million followers on the platform are D’banj (1.16 million), Don Jazzy (1.12 million), 2Face (1.07 million) and Tiwa savage with 1.03 million.
