All Accredited Media, Including AIT, Free To Cover President-Elect’s Activities – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that all accredited media organizations in the country, including the African Independent Television (AIT), are free to cover the activities of the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the incoming Buhari Administration will not discriminate against any media organization, irrespective of its role during the electioneering campaign leading up to the recent polls.

It however enjoined all media organizations to observe the highest level of professional standards in carrying out their duties.

”There is a Code of Ethics guiding the practice of journalism in Nigeria, and this demands every journalist to ensure a strict adherence to the highest levels of ethics and professionalism in carrying out their duties.

”There must be repercussions, within the realms of the law, for media organizations which have wantonly breached the Code of Ethics of the journalism profession and turned themselves to partisans instead of professionals. But such repercussions will not include barring any accredited media organization from covering the activities of the President-elect,” APC said.

Download Full Report Of PWC Forensic Audit On Missing $20billion Oil Money

President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the immediate release of the full audit report of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, accused of diverting $20 billion oil money.

The president gave the directive Monday, a day after the president-elect Muhammadu Buhari, pledged to launch an investigation into the claim made by a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi.

The government immediately released the report following the president’s directive. The presidency criticised the All Progressives Congress, APC, for accusing Mr. Jonathan of indulging in last minute illegal acts ahead of handover of power on May 29.

“President Jonathan is also deeply concerned by the continuing suggestions that his administration still has anything to hide about the unproven allegation that about $20 Billion is unaccounted for by the NNPC during his tenure,” said a statement by presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati.

“To lay the matter to rest, President Jonathan in line with Section 7(2) of the NNPC Act, has directed that the full report of the PWC Forensic Audit of the NNPC accounts be released immediately to the public so that all Nigerians will be properly informed on the matter.”

A bride tells her husband, "Honey, you know I'm a virgin and I don't know anything about sex. Can you explain it to me first?"

"Okay, sweetheart. Putting it simply, we will call your private place 'the prison' and call my private thing 'the prisoner'.

So what we do is put the prisoner in the prison." And they made love for the first time and the husband was smiling with satisfaction.

Nudging him, his bride giggles, "Honey the prisoner seems to have escaped."

Turning on his side, he smiles and says, "Then we will have to re-imprison him." After the second time, the bride says, "Honey, the prisoner is out again!" The husband rises to the occasion and they made love again.

The bride again says, "Honey, the prisoner escaped again," to which the husband yelled, "Hey, it's not a life sentence!!!"

Parents Discover Their 2 Kids Frozen In A Freezer In Delta State

Confusion and sadness reigned in Owa Alero, Ika North-east local government area of Delta State, last Thursday, when the family of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Oseni discovered the corpses of two of their children, David Oseni, 6, and Shedrack, 4, inside their parents’ deep-freezer, purportedly used for their ‘iced block’ business.

According to reports, the children were found frozen, definitely had been there for some time. All efforts to revive them proved abortive, as they were confirmed dead from hypothermia, Leadership
reports.

The Osenis, natives of Etsako, Edo State, have been living in Owa Alero, the ancestral home of the mother.

Neighbours revealed that the parents had locked the children indoors and went to conduct their daily businesses after they returned from their holiday classes, only to discover the tragedy upon their return.

The father, Oseni,  said he had taken the generator for repairs and, upon returning, powered it on to confirm its state, before loading it for the next day’s business.

“After 25 minutes, I lifted the top to check if the freezer was working optimally, only to behold the lifeless bodies of David and Shedrack in the freezer. I raised the alarm, calling the public to the scene.

The children were immediately rushed to a private hospital where they were both confirmed dead by the doctor on duty. The police at the Divisional Office, Owa Oyibu, were contacted and investigations are on to unravel the mystery behind the tragedy,” Oseni said.

$370m Abacha Loot Traced To Luxembourg

Nigerians ferrying money to Switzerland will now have to prove that such wealth is acquired legally before they are allowed to lodge such in the European nation’s banks.

The Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Hans Rudolf Hodel, who disclosed this after a meeting with the President elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, also disclosed that about $370million recovered from the late maximum ruler, Gen. Sani Abacha, has been traced by the Swiss government to a Luxembourg account.

Hodel said in the past the banks only needed to prove that the money deposited with them are legal money, adding that situations Switzerland has changed with depositors now needing to prove that they acquired the money legally before they will be allowed to deposit money in any bank in that country.

He said that collaboration between the Nigeria government and its Swiss counterpart in fighting corruption is a long standing issue, adding “our laws are there to help all countries fighting corruption. We will help this government.

“If you remember, many years ago, we gave back the Abacha money to Nigeria. The situation in Switzerland has changed. The policy is no longer the same. In the past, people come to deposit money in Switzerland without too much controversy. Now, it is not possible to deposit money in Switzerland because of legal origin.

“Before now, the bank has to prove that the money is legal. But now, before you deposit money in any Swiss bank, you have to prove that you have earned that money legally.

“If you are a wealthy businessman, you have money in billions legally, but if, for example as a journalist, you come to Switzerland with two million dollars and say you earned it because you did a very good job, nobody will believe you.”

The Ambassador said the Nigerian government and the Abacha family have sought legal assistance from the Swiss government to enable them retrieve the money, pointing out that Swiss government has offered the legal assistance.

He said further that his government is directly involved since the money is not in a Swiss bank.

On what he discussed with Buhari, he said “Even if the relation is perfect there is always room for improvement. Investors are looking towards Nigeria and it is a good example Nigeria gave to the world by its peaceful election.

“I congratulate the President -elect for this fantastic election and indeed the whole Nigeria people which has shown the world what they are capable of doing and with this election Nigeria has become an example not only to Africa but to the whole world on how election can be conducted.”

Court Freezes Former Federal Lawmaker’s Bank Accounts

Justice Yunusa Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Lagos, capital of Lagos State, has ordered eleven Nigerian banks to freeze the accounts of a former female member of the House of Representatives, Doris Uboh-Ogunkoya. The court order arose from a lawsuit filed against Ms. Uboh-Ogunkoya by Sterling Bank Plc, alleging that she and her company had defaulted on a substantial loan. The lawsuit, which was filed by Dada Awosika on behalf of Sterling Bank, also lists the former legislator’s company, Dagasteel International Limited, as co-defendant.

Ms. Uboh-Ogunkoya was a House of Reps member from 2007 to 2011. She also ran unsuccessfully as a senatorial candidate of the Labor Party in the March 28, 2015 elections.

An affidavit by Mr. Tunji Bajowa, an official of Sterling Bank, disclosed that Ms. Uboh-Ogunkoya and her company received loans of $1,600,000 and N100 million to finance a contract awarded to Dagasteel by different bodies, including the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SDPC), the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), and the Pipelines and Product Marketing Company Limited (PPMC). Sterling alleges that both Ms. Uboh-Ogunkoya and her company did not service the loans.

Justice Mohammed’s ordered United Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank, Enterprise Bank, Skye Bank, Heritage Bank, Keystone Bank, Mainstreet Bank, Union Bank, Diamond Bank, and Stanbic IBTC not to permit the defendants to make transactions on their accounts in the respective banks until the substantive suit was determined.

In addition, the judge issued an interim order restraining the registrar of titles in Lagos and Delta states as well as the director of lands in Abuja from releasing any funds to the defendants connected to the SPDC and NPA contracts.

The lawsuit disclosed that the former legislator provided three parcels of land in Agbor, Delta State, Ajah, in Lagos State, and in Abuja as collateral to secure the loans.

Sterling Bank’s lawsuit added that it faithfully disbursed funds from the credit facilities to the defendants, but added that Ms. Uboh-Ogunkoya and her company never paid back when SPDC paid them for the contract.

The lawsuit accused the defendants of refusing to respond to the bank’s inquiries about the progress of the contracts, adding that the former legislator used the payments she received to fund her 2015 senatorial race.

According to the lawsuit, the defendants were already processing the second part of payment from the SPDC as well as payment from the NPA in order to divert the funds.

Sterling Bank alleged that the legislator and her company had rebuffed numerous efforts by its officials to obtain repayment of the credit facilities. It accused the two defendants of striving to evade their obligations to repay the loan taken Sterling Bank.

Among other reliefs, Sterling Bank wants the court to order the defendants to pay $1.77 million and N117 million naira which are the outstanding values of the loans it extended to the former legislator and her firm.

AIT Correspondent Barred From Covering Buhari’s Event

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari yesterday barred the African Independent Television (AIT) from covering his functions. This came as the security men attached to him barred the station’s correspondent, simply identified as Bebei, from covering happening at Buhari’s residence.

The directive was discreetly given to the correspondent by an official at the Defence House where the crew had gone to cover the visit of Cuban ambassador to Buhari.

Although there was no official order that could be referred to as barring the reporter, the action might have been due to the sour relationship between the All Progressives Congress (APC), its leaders and the television station.

Daar Communications, owners of AIT had in January alleged massive fraud by agents of the APC in its online Presidential Poll.

A statement signed by the Management of Daar Communication said it shut down the website www.aitonline.tv where a poll was conducted between Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the presidential election. According to Daar, the unique IP addresses were significantly less than the numbers of votes polled raising suspicions.

It said a forensic test carried out had shown that 30 identified unique IP addresses had voted 4,969 in favor of General Muhammadu Buhari, the APC Presidential candidate.

Days later, the APC called for the investigation of AIT for broadcasting what it called “fabricated and hate broadcast” against its presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari.

It is, however, unclear whether these happenings are connected with the recent barring of the AIT reporter.

Building Collapses In Lagos, Kills Bricklayer

A building has collapsed in the Bariga area of Lagos killing a bricklayer, identified simply as Tunde, and injuring other workers at the site.

The building, which is on Gbagada Road, was being demolished for reconstruction when the incident occurred.

The incident occurred at about 11am on Friday.

It was gathered that the owner of the building, identified simply as Pastor Nwosu, had brought three workers to the site to renovate the structure.

It was learnt that while the work commenced, a part of the building caved in, injuring one of the workers, identified simply as Mufutau, when Mufutau was rescued from the rubble, residents noticed that Tunde was trapped.

When PUNCH Metro visited the area on Friday, a vulcaniser, who did not want his name in print, said officers from the Bariga Police Division later arrived to take the deceased away.

He said, “The owner of the collapsed building is a pastor. He also owns the church beside the building.

“He brought the workers to demolish the structure so that it can be rebuilt. While the men set to work, the walls just came down on them.

“While people rescued Mufutau, they did not realise that another person was trapped in the rubble.

“It was later that they heard sharp screams and suspected that someone was still trapped. It was the police, who brought him out and took his corpse away.”

It was learnt that Tunde was confirmed dead at a nearby hospital.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, said, “It is a case of sudden and unnatural death. The pastor reported at a police station that he employed three casual workers to renovate a part of his building. However, a wall caved in and collapsed on two of them. One of them died.

Teenager Abducts, Rapes Two-Year-Old Girl

A two-year-old toddler, Precious has been raped by one Azeez Ganiyu, after she was abducted from her residence on Giwa Street, Ijora Badia, Lagos State.

The incident happened on April 16 at about 10am after the victim’s mother left her in a room with a neighbour to buy food at a nearby shop.

Our correspondent gathered that 16-year-old Ganiyu abducted the girl when she walked outside to play with other children.

He reportedly took her to an uncompleted building, said to be a few kilometers away from the victim parents’ house, and raped her.

Precious’ mother and neighbours were thrown into confusion when they did not see the girl in the surroundings.

Chaos Mars Nepal Quake Relief Operations

Thousands of displaced residents in the Nepali capital have expressed anger towards the government, as they face food and water shortages, a day after a magnitude 7.8 quake hit the country and killed more than 2,500 people.

As rescuers continue to dig through the rubble, the densely-populated capital Kathmandu faces a “chaotic situation” with hospitals running out of medical supply, and thousands of people, who are camped in open air areas, are left hungry and thirsty, according to Al Jazeera reporters on the ground.

“A lot of people taking shelter outside in open spaces are without food or water,” Al Jazeera’s Subina Shrestha, who is in Kathmandu, said.

“People are very angry with the government for being left in the lurch.”

Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons, who is also reporting from Kathmandu, said “there’s a great worry about how people are going to get by”, with many structure destroyed and the power out.

He also reported that the frequent aftershocks, including one at magnitude 6.7 on Sunday morning, have rattled the already jittery survivors.

Kathmandu “is going through an absolute trauma of extraordinary proportions” following the worst disaster to hit the Himalayan nation in more than 80 years. At least 1,152 were reported killed in the capital.
