European Police Smash Nigerian Internet Fraud Gang

Police in three European countries have busted an Internet gang suspected of stealing millions of euros by diverting money to illegal online accounts, justice officials said on Wednesday.

Italian, Spanish and Polish police on Tuesday arrested 49 people suspected of running a so-called “man-in-the-middle” scheme, stealing six million euros ($6.7 million) from people and businesses across Europe, Eurojust said in a statement.

Criminals “insert” themselves in transactions between parties, pretending to be legitimate receivers of online payments but they then divert the money into their own bank accounts.

“The suspects, mainly from Nigeria and Cameroon, transferred the illicit profits outside the European Union through a sophisticated network of money laundering transactions,” said the Hague-based Eurojust.

Emmanuel Ibrahim, told the court that the matter was reported by one Jerry Peter of Ikeja, Lagos State, at Utako Police Station, Abuja, on April 29. He added that the accused went to a First Bank Plc branch to transfer the money to another account and in the process he was arrested, while other accomplices were still at large.

Pakistan Hangs One ‘Teen’ Killer, Rejects Another’s Appeal

Pakistan Wednesday hanged a man allegedly tortured into confessing to murder as a minor and rejected an appeal from another also said to have been under-age, in the latest death row cases to draw international condemnation.

Aftab Bahadur Masih went to the gallows in the eastern city of Lahore after more than two decades on death row, prison officials said, despite pleas for mercy from lawyers and church leaders who said he was only 15 when convicted.

Hours later the Supreme Court rejected an appeal by Shafqat Hussain, convicted of killing a young boy in 2004, when his lawyers and family say he was under 18 and therefore not eligible for execution.

Pakistan’s resumption of executions in December after a six-year moratorium has prompted grave concern from rights groups, the United Nations and the European Union.

Critics say the country’s criminal justice system is marred by police torture and poor legal representation, meaning many of those now facing the gallows have not had a fair trial.

Chinese Man Sues Popular Actress Zhao Wei For Staring Too Intensely Through TV Set

Rules making it easier to file lawsuits in China have led to a new concern over frivolous claims, such as one in which a man says actress Zhao Wei stared at him too intensely through his TV set.

The regulations making it more difficult for courts to reject lawsuits took effect May 1, leading to an increase in cases nationwide last month of 29 percent compared with same period last year, to just over 1 million cases, according to the Supreme People's Court.

The registration system requires courts to accept legitimate lawsuits when they are filed or clearly state the reasons for rejecting them, and citizens have the right to appeal the decisions.

"Previously, it was difficult for administrative cases, such as people suing governments, to be accepted," said Li Heping, a Beijing lawyer.

In announcing the registration system, the official Xinhua News Agency said: "Authorities are determined to put an end to obstructive behavior by courts and officials meddling in cases."
