A 20-year old man named Michael Bassey could be restricted behind bars over time if found guilty of rape by an Abeokuta Magistrates' Court in Ogun state. He is currently being remanded in prison after he was accused of raping a 19-year old girl who is a Premier Secondary School student in the state.
Michael Bassey who was arraigned before Magistrate Abiola Onifade, by the prosecutor, Inspector Idowu Ogunleye, allegedly committed the offence on June 10, at Command Day Secondary School, Lafenwa, Abeokuta, the state capital.
The incident according to the prosecutor occurred when the victim was sent on an errand to Command Day Secondary School which was a neighbouring school. As she approached her destination in the school, the accused appeared from a nearby bush, dragged her into the bush and raped her brutally after filling her mouth with sand to prevent her voice from being heard.
Magistrate Onifade did not however take the plea of the accused as she ordered that he be remanded at the Oba Prison in the state pending Director of Public Prosecution's advice, and then adjourned the matter till August 21 for further hearing.
