Stop Eating Water Melon The Wrong Way! How To Eat It Right And The Health Benefits You Get!

When you were a kid your mother probably told you that if you swallowed a watermelon seed, a watermelon would grow inside your belly. I guess it was a fun thing moms liked to do.

But as a result of their harmless fun, you probably spit out quite a few watermelon seeds. I still do sometimes, which is a shame, because those little seeds are full of a whole lot of goodness.

5 AMAZING NUTRIENTS FOUND IN A WATERMELON SEED

B Vitamins
Watermelon seeds are packed with vitamins like niacin, folate and riboflavin. They are absolutely essential for proper digestion, brain functioning, heart health and more. Folate helps your body turn food into energy, making you feel less tired, while niacin lowers your cholesterol. They can also significantly reduce your risk of developing cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s.

Protein
You might not believe it, but a cup of dried watermelon seeds contains over 30 grams of protein! The protein is made up of mostly essential amino acids which can help regulate your blood pressure and treat heart disease. Plus, all that protein is great for muscle growth and keeping you full for longer.

Fat
Watermelon seeds contain a large amount of fat, including omega-6 fatty acids and polysaturated fats. Omega-6 acids have been shown to be good for your blood pressure, while polysaturated fats can lower your bad cholesterol. The downside, however, is that watermelon seeds are quite high in calories, so you should be careful not to eat too many.

Magnesium
One cup of watermelon seeds contains almost 1.5 times your daily recommended intake of magnesium. This healthy mineral can help regulate your metabolism by aiding with the proper digestion of carbohydrates, and is also good for your blood pressure.

Iron
Watermelon seeds contain a great deal of iron, which can help cure anemia and fatigue. Its other health benefits include carrying oxygen to your cells, helping with brain functioning, and aiding the digestion of protein.

And that doesn't even include all the nutrients found in the actual watermelon.

HOW TO BENEFIT FROM WATERMELON SEED

Even if you don’t spit them out, by simply swallowing raw watermelon seeds you might not be getting the maximum benefit, as nature didn’t really intend for seeds to be digested.

A better solution is to collect the seeds and then prepare them one of two ways.

The first option is to spread the fresh seeds out on a pan and allow them to dry. Next you should drizzle some olive oil over them and sprinkle a little sea salt, before roasting them in the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 15 minutes. They make for a great snack.

A second alternative is to make the fresh seeds into a tea. You can do this by first grinding the seeds and then pouring boiling water over them. A good ratio is 1 tablespoon of seeds for 2 cups of water. Allow the seeds to steep for about 15 minutes and then strain them. The result is a great cleansing tea.

I never really believed my mother about the watermelon growing in my belly thing, but I also never would have guessed just how healthy those seeds could be.

Xenophobic Attack: FG Begins Evacuation Of Nigerians From South Africa Monday

As the Xenophobic attack on foreigners including Nigerians continues unabated in South Africa, the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria has stated that evacuation of Nigerians in the hostile country will begin on Monday, 20th April.

The development is a fall out of the xenophobic attacks being meted out by South Africans against other African nationals in their country, including Nigerians.

Leadership  learnt from a press statement emanating from the office of the Commission in Pretoria to that effect. The statement said that  Nigerians who feel endangered, and do not have the fare back home to quickly make themselves available for evacuation.

The statement read in parts: “as from Monday 20th of April 2015, the process of evacuating Nigerians from South Africa will begin as directed by the Federal Government of Nigeria due to the ongoing Xenophobic attack on black foreign nationals in the Republic of South Africa.

“To that effect an evacuation register will be open at the High Commission in Pretoria for Nigerians intending to return to Nigeria but cannot afford flight tickets.”

Huge Debts Await Buhari, In-Coming Governors

After the euphoria of their electoral victories, one of the major challenges that will confront the President-elect, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), and 20 or 21 new governors is the level of debt stock the out-going administrations will leave behind.

According to the Debt Management Office, DMO, the Federal Government has a stock of $6.445 billion in external debt (N1.29 trillion at the rate of one dollar to N200)) and another N7. 9 trillion domestic debt totalling N9.19 trillion, as of December 31, 2014. This is the equivalent of two years budget.

The huge debt stock, if not properly managed, can hamper the delivery of democracy dividends.

According to external debt figures released by the DMO, Lagos State is the most indebted state in the country with a debt of $1,169,712,848.65 (N233.94 billion). The state had also borrowed N167.5 billion from the bond market. Thus, Lagos is owing at least N401.44 billion. This is one of the issues that Governor-elect, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode will confront when he takes over from Governor Babatunde Fashola, next month.

Among the 29 states where governorship elections were held last Saturday, new persons will take over in 20 states, if Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State is re-elected after the April 25 supplementary elections otherwise the number of newcomers will be 21.

The other states where fresh men will take over are Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Enugu, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Lagos, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto and Taraba.

Most of these states are highly indebted. Following declining oil prices in the international market and inability to boost their internally generated revenue, many states, in addition to obtaining loans and overdraft from banks, had approached the capital market in the last four years to raise funds. The amount of money they borrowed through the issuance of bonds has tripled over the period, rising to N673 billion from N298 billion in 2011. About 12 states have issued bonds totalling N375 billion, surpassing the total bonds issued by all states in the country since 1978. Lagos State tops the list of borrowers from the bond market, at N167.5 billion. Rivers recently launched a N100 billion bond. Delta State is third with N50 billion. Others include Gombe (N30 billion), Ekiti (N25 bn), Niger N21 billion), Bauchi (N15 billion) and Benue (N13 bn).

As of last December, Nigeria’s total public debt stock, according to the DMO stood at about $67.73 billion and N11.24 trillion, which is about N1.2 trillion higher than the 2013 figure of N10.04trillion.

A breakdown of the figures showed that external debt, including those of the states, was $9.71 billion and N1.63 trillion. The Federal Government’s domestic debt was $47.05 billion and N7.9trillion, while those of the states stood at $10.97 billion and N1.708 trillion.

Using the DMO’s external debt figures without adding domestic debts (see tables), Lagos tops the chart of 10 most indebted states in the country with $1.17bn or N233.94 billion debt. It is distantly followed by Kaduna (N46.88 bn), Cross River (N28.29 bn), Edo (N24.63 bn), Ogun (N21.83 bn), Bauchi (17.51 bn), Katsina (N15.79 bn), Osun (N14.81 bn), Oyo (N14.47 bn) and Enugu (N13.79)

Leading the states with little exposure to multilateral and bilateral loans are Taraba (N4.56 bn), Borno (N4.61 bn), Delta (N4.85 bn), Plateau (N6.19 bn), Yobe (N6.25 bn), Benue (N6.62 bn), Abia (N6.76 bn), Zamfara (N7.11 bn) and Kogi (N7.16 bn).

However, if domestic debts are added, states like Taraba, Borno and Abia, which have not issued bonds are the least indebted. World Bank Consultant and Abia State Finance Commissioner, Dr Phillip Nto, said Abia State is reluctant to take bonds like many other states because it would mortgage the future of Abians.

He said: ‘’Ordinarily when you collect bond, you are mortgaging your future because you pay over a long period of time but our governor is one that feels that it is not proper to mortgage the future of the state. Abia State is trying to come out from the mess, the monumental difficulty which it was pushed into in early 2000, so for the state to be mortgaged again means that the state will be declared insolvent. It is the reason the governor (Theodore Orji) is not enthusiastic about going to the bond market. But what some other states are achieving with their bond money, Governor T.A. Orji is also achieving with the amount he gets from the federation account and the IGR.’’

Broken into geo-political zones, the South-West and North-West geo-political zones are foreign debt-most exposed zones. The South-West owes N304.88 billion while the North-West has on its neck, a foreign debt of N106.61 billion.

Conversely, the South-East is the least indebted zone with a debt of N49.25 billion followed by North-East (N50.20 billion). Enugu is the most indebted state in the South-East with N13.786 billion debt. The legislative arm of the state government is currently at daggers drawn with the executive over a fresh N11 billion local debt.

The South-South zone owes N85.46 billion while the North-Central has to repay N56.77 billion.

Analysing the Federal Government debt, the DMO said that the debt is sustainable as sustainability analysis showed that the debt/GDP ratio is 11.6 per cent and Nigeria is at a low risk of debt distress, if the reforms embarked upon by the present administration in key sectors were retained and fully implemented.  The bulk of the federal government loans were concessionary with low interests and long moratorium.

Currently, the Federal Government spends N700 billion yearly on debt servicing

Disturbed by the insatiable appetite of state governments for loans, the Federal Government, last year, directed Deposit Money Banks not to grant fresh loans to state governments unless they got approval and clearance from the Federal Ministry of Finance.

The Minister of State for Finance, Bashir Yuguda, said the decision is not aimed at stalling the development efforts of the state governments, as alleged, but to protect the states from excessive accumulation of debts.

“The domestic debt profile of some states is scary. The states are so much in debt that only a small amount of their allocations get to them at the end of the day because most times money for debt servicing is removed from source,”

Addressing participants in Course 23 for security agents at the National War College, Abuja, Yuguda said most of the states have been experiencing difficulties in servicing their existing debts and it would not be advisable to allow them take fresh loans.

Rather, he stressed the need for the states to continue to look inwards for other sources of revenue to pursue their development programmes.

Jay Z Has Been Calling Tidal Subscribers Personally While CEO Bows Out

Rapper Jay Z bought streaming service Tidal less than three months ago, and while he has reportedly been taking a hands-on role with customer service, it appears there have also been some staff cuts at the same time.

Three weeks after the site's official launch, Business Insider reports that around 25 people, including CEO Andy Chen, lost their jobs due to "streamlining."

Tidal announced in a statement that Chen had been replaced by Peter Tonstad, former CEO of Tidal parent company Aspiro Group. Tonstad "has a better understanding of the industry and a clear vision for how the company is looking to change the status quo," according to the statement.

Meanwhile, Jay Z has been personally calling people who have listened to his music on the streaming service, Tidal executive Vania Schlogel told Business Insider.

"He called some of his fans and one of them made the funniest comment. He said 'This is the best customer service call I've ever received!,'" she told the publication.

Gunmen Kill NBA Chairman In Ughelli

THE series of killings rocking Ughelli metropolises, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, took a different dimension on Thursday night when gunmen suspected to be assassins killed in cold blood, the Ughelli branch chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, Barr Austin Icheghe.

The incident it was gathered happened around 9pm at the 14 Ekredjebor residence of the victim in the presence of his immediate family.

Julius Malema Insults President Zuma’s Family, Says The Government Promoted Violence

Julius Malema, leader of the South African opposition party the Economic Freedom Fighters Party (EFF), launched a series of personal insults against President Jacob Zuma and his family. Malema told his fellow Parliamentarians that it is the government which is most responsible for the recent plight of xenophobic violence.

President Zuma called for an end to xenophobic attacks earlier this week, which left five dead and thousands more displaced.

His concerns, however, seemed too unspirited for Mr. Malema who proclaimed that President Zuma’s statement and “body language did not suggest a leader.”

The opposition leader then reminisced about the days Cuban ex-pats educated him on the importance of understanding body language.

Mr. Malema’s diatribe continued on as he attacked members of President Zuma’s family. “Your own son continues to say these people must be killed...Your son is such a typical example of a family member you cannot whip in line.”

He blamed the government lead by President Zuma for promoting a culture of violence in South Africa, claiming that “the State, being the elder for the whole society, becomes responsible for all the violence meted against our foreign nationals.”

Mr. Malema added that “it was under your leadership that when you disagreed with people at Marikana, you killed them because you never believed in peaceful resolution of differences.”

It will be recalled that the Marikana Mine massacre, which happened in 2012, was caused by South African police gunning down unarmed mining protesters.

Julius Malema concluded his remarks by urging South Africans not to “kill each other, no country can survive in isolation.”

Chibuike, was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on January 12, 2013 at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, during an inward clearance of passengers on Emirate Airlines from Malaysia.

He was arrested for unlawful possession of One Hundred and Fifty Nine thousand, Two Hundred United States Dollars ($159,200) which is suspected to be proceeds of money laundering and was later transferred to the EFCC for further investigation and prosecution.

The charge read:

That You, "Augustine Anidiobu Chibuike on or about the 12th of January, 2013 at Murtala Muhammed International Airport within the Jurisdiction of the Federal High Court had in your possession cash in the sum of One Hundred and Fifty Nine thousand, Two Hundred United States of America Dollars ($159,200) which you transported from Malaysia via Dubai to Lagos, and failed to declare the sum of  One Hundred and Fifty Nine thousand, Two Hundred United States of America Dollars ($159,200) to the officers and men of the Nigerian Custom Service as required under the provisions of section 2(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No.1 of 2012) and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 2(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011 (as amended by Act No.1 of 2012).

When the charge was read to the defendant, he pleaded not guilty.

In view of the plea,  prosecution counsel, Abba Mohammed asked for a trial date and prayed the court to remand the defendant in prison custody.

The defense counsel, Hycinth Odu  urged the court for a short adjourned date to file an application for bail and for the defendant to remain in the EFCC custody,  pending the hearing of bail application.

However, Justice Abang  ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ikoyi prison pending the consideration of his bail application. The case is adjourned till June 23, 2015 for hearing of bail application.
