Burundi President Nkurunziza Still In Dar Es Salaam : Tanzania President

Tanzanian presidency have said that Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza is still in Dar es Salaam

Some other sources also said that talks underway between rival Burundi army factions after coup attempt.

A top Burundian general launched a coup attempt against President Pierre Nkurunziza on Wednesday, bringing to a head weeks of violent protests against the president’s bid to stand for a third term.

General Godefroid Niyombare, a powerful former intelligence chief who was sacked earlier in the year, announced via a private radio station that the president had been overthrown hours after he left for neighbouring Tanzania for talks with regional leaders.

The presidency, however, said in a brief message on Twitter that the coup had “failed”.

Pro-Nkurunziza troops were still in control of key institutions including the presidential palace and state broadcaster, witnesses said, and fired warning shots to stop demonstrators from marching on the state television and radio building.

“President Pierre Nkurunziza is removed from office, the government is dissolved,” General Niyombare said in the dramatic broadcast on the Insaganiro radio station.

“All people are asked to respect the lives and property of others.”

Hundreds of civilians ran through the streets of the capital, cheering “victory” and running with Burundi’s flag, an AFP photographer said.

The general said he was committed to the democratic process and would work with others towards holding elections in the impoverished, landlocked central African nation.

Over 20 people have been killed and scores wounded since late April, when Burundi’s ruling CNDD-FDD party nominated Nkurunziza to stand for re-election in June 26 polls.

Rescuers Battle To Reach Survivors Of New Nepal Quake

Rescuers battled Wednesday to reach survivors of a deadly new earthquake in Nepal that triggered landslides and brought down buildings, as hundreds of troops searched for a missing US military helicopter. Thousands of traumatised survivors spent the night outdoors, afraid to return to their houses after Tuesday’s 7.3-magnitude quake hit, less than three weeks after the country was devastated by its deadliest quake in more than 80 years.

Dozens of people were killed in the latest disaster, bringing the overall death toll to more than 8,200 and compounding the difficulty of reaching far-flung mountain communities in desperate need of shelter, food and clean water. The United Nations said it faced a “monumental challenge” to bring relief to victims, many of whom live in areas accessible only on foot or by helicopter, before the monsoon rains began.

UN resident coordinator Jamie McGoldrick said Tuesday’s quake had exacerbated an already desperate situation as he delivered an urgent call for more funding. “Damaged houses will be further damaged. Houses and schools and buildings that were spared in the first one were probably affected yesterday. Roads, we know, have been damaged,” he said. “It is extremely urgent that the donors realise that we are running against the monsoon that is coming.”

The Nepal army mounted a huge ground and air search for a US Marine Corps helicopter that went missing on Tuesday during a disaster relief operation in the eastern district of Dolakha, near where the latest quake hit. Spokesman Jagdish Pokharel said the army would keep searching until it found the chopper, which was carrying six US Marines and two Nepal army soldiers when it disappeared in a remote mountainous area.

“We have been searching for the missing helicopter since early morning but have not found it yet,” he said. “They came to help us here… (and) we will continue to search for them.” Police said 76 people had been confirmed dead and more than 2,000 injured in the new quake, which was centred 76 kilometres (47 miles) east of Kathmandu, and also killed 17 people in northern India.

Earthquake Hits Japan

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of northeastern Japan, the US Geological Survey has said, but authorities have not issued a tsunami warning and there were no immediate reports of damage.

The quake struck at 6:12am (21:12 GMT Tuesday) off the east coast of Japan’s Honshu island in the Pacific Ocean at a depth of 38.9km, according to USGS.

Japan’s meteorological agency said there was no immediate tsunami threat from the earthquake, which hit 33km southeast of the nearest city of Ofunato.

Large areas jolted by the latest tremor were among those damaged by the 2011 quake and tsunami that killed more than 18,000 people and triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima power plant.

Wednesday’s earthquake did not damage any of the nuclear reactors in the region, including those at the crippled Fukushima facility, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said.

All of Japan’s reactors have been off-line since the Fukushima disaster.

Train services in the region, including “Shinkansen” bullet train operations, were temporarily suspended following the quake, officials said.

A Man Goes To Jail For Killing His Stepfather With A Wedgie

A 34-year-old man who killed his stepfather giving him a so-called “atomic wedgie” last year is going to jail for involuntary manslaughter and that’s the silver lining.

Brad Lee Davis killed his stepfather last January when he managed to suffocate him inside his own underwear while performing the wedgie. Davis just pleaded guilty to the charges, but it reportedly could have been much worse for him as prosecutors originally tried to pursue first-degree murder charges.

Although there was some (scant) evidence to support the necessary intent, Davis and his stepfather reportedly had a contentious relationship and he “texted a friend that night he was fixing to mess Denver up and later texted he had nothing to lose”, he eventually pleaded out before trial.

NMA, ASUU Jittery As 7 Members Receive Kidnap Notice

Worried by the spate of kidnapping of its members, both the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, have called for a total overhaul of the security strategies in the state, even as no fewer than seven doctors had received text messages from alleged kidnappers. Six persons, including the former Chief Medical Director, CMD, Dr Patrick Adegun and a nurse working with the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, Mrs Margaret Aladeleka were abducted in different parts of the state in the last few weeks.

Also, a lecturer at Obafemi Awolowo University, Dr Femi Omisore was abducted at the weekend, while his driver was killed at Ido Ekiti. Speaking at a joint press conference in Ado Ekiti yesterday the NMA and ASUU expressed concerns over their members becoming target of kidnapping, lamenting that the Police and the Department of State Services, DSS, are not handling the matter professionally.

Through the ASUU, Akure Zonal Coordinator, Dr Alex Odiyia, the lecturers appealed to Governor Ayodele Fayose to get rid of hoodlums for Ekiti to be peaceful. “The government should as a matter of urgency overhaul the entire Police Force and other relevant agencies saddled with the responsibility of keeping peace in the state and more importantly relocate the heads of both services who find it difficult to unravel the root cause of our present predicament”.

Black Miss Japan Fights Racial Prejudice

Ariana Miyamoto entered the Miss Universe Japan beauty contest after a mixed-race friend committed suicide. And she endured abuse after winning the crown because of her skin colour.

Far from being put off by the backlash, Miyamoto resolved to use her new-found fame to help fight racial prejudice in much the same way British supermodel Naomi Campbell broke down cultural barriers in the fashion industry a generation ago.

“I’m stubborn,” said Miyamoto, the daughter of a Japanese mother and black American father, who turned 21 on Tuesday.

“I was prepared for the criticism. I’d be lying to say it didn’t hurt at all. I’m Japanese , I stand up and bow when I answer the phone. But that criticism did give me extra motivation,” she said in an interview.

“I didn’t feel any added pressure because the reason I took part in the pageant was my friend’s death. My goal was to raise awareness of racial discrimination,” added Miyamoto, who was bullied as a schoolgirl growing up in the port town of Sasebo, near Nagasaki.

42 Killed As Another Major Quake Rattles Nepal

A major earthquake hit a remote mountain region of Nepal on Tuesday, killing at least 42 people while triggering landslides and toppling buildings less than three weeks after the Himalayan nation was ravaged by its worst quake in decades.

The Associated Press reported that the magnitude-7.3 quake centered midway between the capital of Kathmandu and Mount Everest hit hardest in districts northeast of the capital.

It terrified a nation already shell-shocked and struggling after a more powerful quake on April 25 killed more than 8,150 and flattened entire villages, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless.

Information was slow to reach Kathmandu after Tuesday’s quake, but officials expected the death toll to rise as reports arrived of people being buried under rubble, according to the U.N.’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
