Gunmen kidnap Kogi High Court Judge, Kills orderly

Gunmen on Monday kidnapped a Kogi High Court Judge, Mr Justice Samuel Obayomi, and killed his orderly, Cpl. Usman Musa in an early morning attack. 

Obayomi of the Ebogogo High Court in the Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi was kidnapped while on his way to work.

His driver, Mr Ajayi Kolawole, told newsmen in Lokoja that the incident took place in front of the Executive Guest Villa at Okene GRA in the Okene Local Government Area of the state.

6 Suspects Arrested Over Stabbing Of 2 Pupils In Kano

The police in Kano State have arrested six suspects in connection with the stabbing of two pupils of Fagge Special Primary school in Kano on Wednesday.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Majiya disclosed this in Kano on Monday while briefing newsmen on its activities.

Majiya said the suspects were apprehended last week following a tip-off, adding that they were now assisting the police in its investigation.

He said as soon as investigation was concluded, the suspects would be charged to court.

I Stole To Help My Friend Treat Kidney Failure

A 55-year-old transporter, identified as Alhaji Ramon Adeleke, who was recently arrested by operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, has said he went into robbery to save the life of his friend who has kidney failure.

The father of four, who was caught alongside his friend, Lukmon Shoyoye on closed-circuit television, CCTV, footage stealing a Toyota Corolla parked in a hotel located around Allen Avenue, told Vanguard: “I gave the money to my friend, Chief Kola, who had kidney problem because he was very sick.”

It was gathered that the duo committed the crime on November 16, 2014. Adeleke was arrested on April 9, 2015, while on his way to a mosque around Allen Avenue. Adeleke’s arrest led to Shoyoye’s.

Osun Workers To Begin Indefinite Strike May 26 Over Unpaid Salaries

The Osun Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Adekomi Jacob, says workers in the state will begin an indefinite strike on Tuesday (May 26) because of non-payment of salaries and entitlements to workers.

The chairman spoke a press briefing in Osogbo on Monday, where he disclosed that six months salaries had not been paid to workers.

Jacob said that the state government’s refusal to pay salaries of workers and arrears of retirees’ pension, among others, prompted its members to resolve to embark on an indefinite strike.

Jonathan Signs Two Bills Into Law

President Goodluck Jonathan, Monday, signed two bills into laws. 

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati told state House Correspondents that the two bills include the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 and the Immigration Act 2015.

It would be recalled that the Senate on May 4 passed the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 into law.

Oil Marketers Move To End Fuel Scarcity

Oil marketers have restated their commitment to the quick resolution of the crises in the oil industry that has led to scarcity of petroleum products and untold hardship on Nigerians.

In a statement by Executive Secratary, Major Oil Marketers Association, MOMAN, Thomas Olawore, said the association is leading efforts to engage all stakeholders to resolve the on-going fuel scarcity.

” The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria is leading efforts to engage all stakeholders to resolve the on-going fuel scarcity.  MOMAN is talking to all parties involved to suspend the current strike and negotiate their differences.  All parties are currently talking to resolve all issues.”

Deadly Rainfall Force Texans From Homes

A line of storms stretching from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes dumped record rainfall on parts of the Plains and Midwest, spawning tornadoes and causing major flooding that forced at least 2,000 Texans from their homes.

Three deaths were blamed on the storms Saturday and Sunday, including two in Oklahoma and one in Texas, where a man's body was recovered from a flooded area along the Blanco River, which rose 26 feet in an hour and created huge piles of debris. The line of storms prompted tornado warnings and watches as far north as Illinois Sunday night, and the weather system was expected to linger over a large swath of the region Monday, putting a damper on some Memorial Day plans.

Among the worst-affected communities were Wimberley and San Marcos, which are in Central Texas along the Blanco River in the increasingly popular corridor between Austin and San Antonio.

Total Blackout As Shiroro Power Plant Suffers System Collapse

The already bad state of electricity supply across the country was made worse on Sunday following of a system collapse at the Shiroro Hydro-electric Power Plant in Niger State.

The Shiroro plant has a power generating capacity of 600 megawatts and began operation in 1990.

It was gathered that the system collapse at the plant happened at about 4.10pm on Sunday.

The system collapse resulted in massive load shedding as allocations to electricity distribution companies from the national grid was seriously reduced.

It was learnt that the power allocation to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company was reduced from about 450MW to 15MW.

Airport Workers Shut Down FAAN Headquarters Over Beating Of Colleague

Angry officials of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) protesting the attack on one of their staff members beaten to comatose by airforce personnel two weeks ago, have barricaded the the headquarters of the agency in Lagos shutting out other users of the complex.

A witness, who asked not to be named, said that activities at the FAAN headquarters have been grounded by the protesting workers.

He said the protesters were headed towards the international wing of the airport, and they seem to have planned their protest to coincide with the visit of the Minister of Aviation, Osita Chidoka, who is attending a function at the international wing of the airport this morning.

Man Hangs Himself In Lagos

The body of a man was yesterday found dangling near a tree along 7Up/Governor Road in Alausa, Ikeja area of Lagos State.

The dangling body of the man in his 30s caused a scare in the area, as many pedestrians avoided taking that side of the road, while motorists delayed momentarily to catch a glimpse of him before driving away.

Nobody had been able to identify the lifeless body.

The general manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Femi Oke-Osanyintolu confirmed the incident.

Buhari To Inherit 8.1Billion Presidential Villa Debts

When President-elect Muhammau Buhari moves into the State House after the May 29 handover, he will be confronted with N8.185,575,211.50 debts.

President Goodluck Jonathan will on May 28 conduct Buhari round the Villa – the seat of power in Abuja where facilities are said to be ageing.

About N3,647,793, 305.76 is needed to fix the infrastructure at the Villa.

These highlights are contained in a report submitted to the Federal Government Transition Committee, which is headed by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

The committee is expected to submit its report today to the Ahmed Joda-led APC Transition Committee.

The liabilities include contracts/service providers (N1,234,913,628.92), staff claims (N1,238,876,080.16), local contracts commitments and liabilities, including Julius Berger Nigeria (N6, 946,699, 131.34).

The report said: “The President had on December 3 last year approved the release of N3,394,168,460.95 for the payment of recurrent/overhead debts and capital debts due to other contractors, consultants and service providers. This is yet to be released by the Federal Ministry of Finance, it said.

Actress Anne Meara, Wife Of Jerry Stiller, Dies

Actress and comedian Anne Meara, whose comic work with husband Jerry Stiller helped launch a 60-year career in film and TV, has died. She was 85.

Jerry Stiller and son Ben Stiller say Meara died Saturday. No other details were provided.

The Stiller family released a statement to The Associated Press on Sunday describing Jerry Stiller as Meara's "husband and partner in life."

"The two were married for 61 years and worked together almost as long," the statement said.

139 Grave Sites, 28 Trafficking Camps Found In Malaysia

A total of 139 grave sites and 28 human-trafficking camps have been found in a remote northern Malaysian border region, the country's top police official told reporters Monday.

"(Authorities) found 139 suspected graves. They are not sure how many bodies are inside each grave," national police chief Khalid Abu Bakar said.

Fayose Lifts Curfew On Ado-Ekiti

Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, yesterday, lifted the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed on Ado-Ekiti on May 22, following a civil disturbance. 

The governor stated this in his broadcast to the people of the state in Ado-Ekiti. He said the state government had also placed N2 million reward for anybody that could provide information that will facilitate the arrest of those that kidnapped 11 people in different parts of the state recently.

He described the crisis between the Hausa community and commercial drivers in Ado-Ekiti that led to the imposition of the curfew as unfortunate. 

He urged residents to be law-abiding and conduct their activities in manner that would not cause further break down of law and order.

Banks Send Notice Of Early Closure Due To Fuel Scacity

Banks across the nation have sent notices of early closure to customers due to the current shortage of petroleum products in the country. 

This has limited their ability to supply diesel to all their branches and has hindered normal branch operations.

Due to this, they unavoidably have to close their branches nationwide at 1pm, from today Monday, 25th May 2015.
