The police at Ojokoro Division have arrested a 34-year-old
man who has been parading himself as a legal practitioner in Lagos State,
western Nigeria.
The suspect, Matthew Olayeye, was arrested at Ojokoro
Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he was facing another criminal charge.
His arrest followed a report by Barrister Seyi Olawumi, the
General Secretary of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Ikeja branch, Lagos, that
he was an impostor.
The police promptly responded and arrested him at the court
and detained him at their station for investigation.
P.M.NEWS gathered that Olayeye appeared before Magistrate
Olayinka as a counsel in a matter which attracted suspicion among the lawyers
present at the court.
The lawyers contacted the NBA which has been trailing him.
According Olawumi, they had received several reports
concerning Olayeye’s activities and NBA members were told to report to the NBA
executives whenever he was found.
On the fateful day, Olayeye was in court where he was facing
a criminal matter bordering on fraud.
He allegedly issued a Senator a dud cheque and was charged
with the alleged offence.
When our reporter visited Ojokoro Police Station where
Olayeye was detained, he opened up and said he was not a lawyer but did not
explain why he appeared as one before a Magistrate.
Efforts to speak with the DPO proved abortive as he was said
to have gone to the State Police Command Headquarters at Ikeja.
