There was panic at the domestic wing of the Murtala Muhammed
Airport in Lagos on Wednesday evening as a tanker suspected to be carrying
aviation fuel burst into flames while in motion.
It was learnt that the tanker, with plate number MUX165XX,
caught fire at Strabag Bus Stop opposite the Terminal 2 of the airport.
Witnesses said the tanker was carrying flammable liquid
suspected to be aviation fuel before it caught fire.
The fire was, however, immediately put out by a combined
team of the tanker driver, officials from the Federal Airports Authority of
Nigeria, passers-by and Lagos State Traffic Management Agency officials.
Their prompt intervention, our correspondent gathered,
halted the spread of the fire to other vehicles.
The tanker, which had the inscription, “Heizol,” on its
side, was said to be on its way out of the airport when the incident happened.
The incident caused traffic gridlock on the road and
officials of FAAN and LASTMA had to control vehicular movements in a bid to
reduce the congestion on the busy road.
