Police Arraign Driver For Stealing Boss’ N1.6m


The police have arraigned a 34-year-old driver, Innocent Togboe, before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island, Lagos State, for allegedly stealing N1.65m belonging to his boss, Ladi Adeogun.

The suspect was said to have stolen the money on August 28, 2013, after which he absconded to his hometown in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

It was learnt that on the day of the incident, the suspect had driven his boss to a gym at 1004, Lagos.

While Adeogun was exercising, Togboe allegedly took the money in the car and fled to Cotonou.

However, the suspect, who later returned to Lagos, was arrested on Friday, April 17, 2015 at Abijo in the Ibeju Lekki area of the state while drinking in a pub.

The suspect reportedly confessed to the police that he used part of the money to build a four self-contained apartment for himself.

He was also said to have used the rest of the money for the release of his sister who was in police custody at the time.

He was arraigned on Monday on one count of stealing.

The charge read, “That you, Innocent Togboe, on August 28, 2013 on the Victoria Island, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did unlawfully steal the sum of N1.65m, property of one Ladi Adeogun and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary trial.

His defence counsel, Mr. G. Agoi, asked the court to grant him bail in liberal terms.

The magistrate, Mrs. F. Dalley, admitted him to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The case was adjourned till May 7, 2015.
