Tragedy struck yesterday at the Agudama suburb of Yenagoa
the Bayelsa State capital when a man in his late thirties stabbed his
girlfriend to death and attempted to kill himself by drinking poisonous
substance suspected to be sniper.
The deceased identified as Rita Abalorun, aged 35, was
reportedly stabbed with a knife by her boy friend simply known as James.
The tragic incident, occurred at
about 11.20 am at the lovers’ residence at the sleepy Agudama settlement in the
outskirts of Yenagoa.
Though the motive of the attack could not be immediately
ascertained as the suspect (James), was found unconscious in a nearby bush and
is yet to give his statement to the police.
He was said to have dealt his girlfriend a deadly stab
following a bitter quarrel over his alleged indecent affairs with the deceased
sister.
On realizing the enormity of his action, the man was said to
have hurriedly arranged a tricycle operator popularly known as Keke NAPEP to
convey the deceased to the hospital.
It was however learnt that instead of the Keke operator
rushing the victim to the hospital as instructed diverted to the Akenfa police
station where she was confirmed dead before she could be taken to hospital for
treatment.
James was said to have taken to his heels but was later
traced to a nearby bush by security operatives on his trail where he was found
unconscious.
He was believed to have drank a poisonous substance
suspected to be sniper.
The state police public relations officer, Mr.
Asinim Butswat confirmed the incident. He said the remains of the deceased have been deposited at
the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa while the suspect is
receiving treatment at the hospital under police watch.
