Fake Doctor Practicing With Stolen Licence For 9 Years Arrested

Martins Ugwu, who stole the licence as far back as 2006, is a senior medical officer on Grade Level 13, he was said to have impersonated his friend Dr George Daniel, who hails from the same local government with him, Orukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State. Ugwu was Daniel’s best man during the latter’s wedding that same year.

According to Nigerian watch, Ugwu, was due to be promoted to an assistant director in the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control recently, having worked in the civil service since 2006 using Daniel’s name.

He was however, recently indicted by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for posing as  an impostor and subsequently arrested by the police last week Thursday but was released few hours later, a move that has sparked rumours that the police might have been bribed.

In a letter to the chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, dated June 4, 2015, signed by the MDCN registrar, Dr A Ibrahim, Ugwu was described as an impostor and the case was reported to the police for further investigation and action.

The letter read: “Records available to the council revealed that this Dr Davidson Daniel George is an impostor as he is impersonating another Dr Davidson Daniel who is the genuine doctor and currently undertakes his residency training in Jos, Plateau State. The council summoned and interacted with the genuine doctor who gave some vital information on the impostor. As it is, Mr Martins Ugwu is an impostor. You may therefore wish to take further actions to deal with this matter in accordance with the provisions of the law.”

The MDCN has also expressed its reservations with the manner the police handled the case and promised to petition the inspector-general of police. The council is currently investigating and prosecuting about 40 cases of quack doctors in court.

Ugwu was part of a government committee that met more than 200 volunteers returning from some west African countries where they had gone to help fight ebola under an African Union mission, last week in Abuja.
