New York Takes A Major Step To Fight Sexual Assault On College Campuses

Yesterday, Governor Cuomo signed into law a bill that expands the state's "Yes Means Yes" policy to include private colleges. "A woman isn't going to be made to feel guilty or complicit or fearful if she goes forward," he said, the New York Times reports. "We're not going to allow the schools to cover it up anymore. Those days are over."

The policy, which was adopted by New York's public universities last year, creates a Sexual Assault Victims' Bill of Rights, allocates $10 million of the state's budget to fight sexual assault, provides a uniform reporting system to ensure all universities report cases of sexual assault to the state properly, and requires campuses statewide to define consent as "an affirmative, unambiguous and, conscious decision" by each person involved."
