Motorcycles, Tricycles Burnt As Okada Riders, NURTW Officials Clash In Lagos

There was confusion in the NNPC area of Ejigbo in Lagos State, on Monday, when fight erupted between motorcycle riders and members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) over fees.
However, the police on Monday evening said it had restored normalcy to the  area.
It was gathered that the fracas resulted from an increase in the fees officials of the NURTW charged commercial motorcyclists.

It was learnt that an attempt by the union to collect the new fee was resisted by one of the riders which reportedly led to his being beaten up by members of the union.
In reaction, the Okada riders were said to have mobilised and fought back which led to a full blown fight that saw motorcycles, trIcycles and shops torched.
But the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, told reporters that the police were on top of the situation and had brought it under control.
"There was a fracas between motorcycle riders and their unions over increased tariff. This further escalated and led to some kiosks along the road being destroyed.
"Some motorcycles and tricycles were burnt but no life was lost," he told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
